Compost Tea Recipe
California Humus: (4qt) California Humus results from a three to five year, fungal-dominant decomposition process of pure woody materials. This process provides optimum conditions for the growth of beneficial fungi, nematodes, protozoa and bacteria. Serves as a complete inoculant for a diversity of beneficial soil microorganisms.
Worm Castings: (4qt) Are the excrement of earth worms and are rich in growth enhancers, plant nutrients, and trace minerals. Each worm casting is coated in an oil as it passes through their digestive track that normally erodes off over two months providing its nutrients in a time released fashion. When added to compost tea this oil is eroded of quickly, suppling plants and microbes with all of its nutrients immediately.
Insect Frass: (2qt) Insect Frass is the excrement of herbivore insects and insect exoskeleton parts, both are beneficial to the plant and like worm casting contains trace minerals, growth enhancers and plant nutrients. It is also a great fungal food in compost tea. An important component of insect frass is chitin which is broken down by the plant naturally, it is a plant growth enhancer and a substance that boosts the ability of plants to defend themselves against fungal diseases such as downy and powdery mildew, gray mold, and early and late blight when applied foliarly.
Humate / Kelp Powder: (2qt) Contains plant stimulants/enhancers that help to support/ improve nutrient absorption of all plants and reduce fertilizer inputs. It helps plants tolerate environmental stresses such as heat, drought, frost, insects and diseases.
Fish Hydrolysate: (2qt) This is a great fungal and plant food. The nitrogen and other nutrients contained are chelated, meaning they are readily available for plants to consume. Being that it is made from whole fish and contains all of the vitamins, amino acids, enzymes, oils and naturally occurring plant growth hormones.
Mycos Gold: (2cups) is a mycorrhizae inoculant. In healthy soil there are millions of mycorrhizae present helping the plants root system absorb essential nutrients and water It helps to produce more vigorous and healthy plants, improves plant establishment and their tolerance to environmental stresses.
Azospirillium: (4oz) (once a year) is a nitrogen fixing bacteria. Nitrogen is required in the greatest amount by plants. Nitrogen drives chlorophyll production in the foliage and keeps plants green. This is a naturally occurring bacteria that lives symbiotically with a host plant and supplies nitrogen straight from the atmosphere. These bacteria absorb nitrogen, converts it to a form that the plant can use. Helps replaces nitrogen fertilizer.
Unsulfured Blackstrap Molasses: (2qt) Excellent food for bacteria. Must be unsulfured so as not to harm the beneficial fungus. Molasses also contains iron, calcium, potassium and other minerals required by plants and microbes.
